Electrician Licenses in Florida (2026 Guide)

Florida's electrical contractors are licensed by the DBPR Electrical Contractors' Licensing Board. Florida has two classes of electrical contractor: Certified (statewide) and Registered (county-limited). Given Florida's rapid construction growth, the state actively enforces licensing — unlicensed electrical work is a first-degree misdemeanor. County occupational licenses and per-project building permits are also required.

Licenses & Permits for Electricians in Florida

Electrical Contractor License (EC or ER) State
Issued by: Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) — Electrical Contractors' Licensing Board (ECLB)
Required to contract for electrical work in Florida. Certified Electrical Contractors (EC) hold a statewide license; Registered Electrical Contractors (ER) are limited to one county. Both require passing the ECLB exam and maintaining required insurance. Biennial renewal.
County Occupational License / Business Tax Receipt Local
Issued by: County tax collector's office
All Florida businesses require a county-level Business Tax Receipt. Electrical contractors should obtain receipts in each county where they regularly work, and in some cases city-level receipts are also required.
Building Permit (per project) Local
Issued by: County or city building department
Required for all electrical installations, panel upgrades, and significant wiring work. Florida's building code is one of the most stringent in the U.S. due to hurricane requirements. Inspections occur at rough-in and final stages.
